About this time of year, our hair is starting to feel the effects of summer. Harsh sun, swimming in chlorinated pools or salty seawater and the heat are all likely starting to damage your hair. How do you repair it, or better yet, prevent the damage in the first place?

Well, short of covering all your hair every time you go out of the house or wearing a bathing cap when you go swimming, it’s hard to keep your hair perfect throughout the summer. The hair care experts at Pavlova Salon in Smithtown, NY and Wading River, NY offer these tips to keep your hair in tip-top shape.
 

First, Do No Harm
Wash properly. You’ve been washing your hair all your life and you don’t give it a second thought, right? Well, there’s the right way and the wrong way to shampoo your hair. First of all, make sure your hair is thoroughly wet before you start to add the shampoo. And don’t overuse it. Use only enough to get through all your hair. This shouldn’t amount to more than the size of a quarter in your palm. Rub the shampoo onto both hands before applying and don’t overdo the application. You should only have to lather for about 30 seconds. More than that is overkill. After you wash, rinse your hair with cool water. If you’re washing your hair in the shower, do this right before you get out. This will help to seal in the moisture in your hair (it’s also invigorating for the rest of you).

Go Backwards and Massage. When you get out of the shower, brush your hair from back to front. This will help distribute the natural oils in your hair thoroughly throughout all your hair, whether long or short. You’ll know you’ve brushed well if your scalp starts to tingle. Continue reading →

We all use hair products to clean and condition our hair as well as to get the hold we need for that special hair style. There are hundreds of hair care products on the market and their not all alike. In general, when selecting the hair care products for your head, avoid using hair styling products with alcohol. Alcohol on your hair can leave it dry and damaged.The experts at Pavlova Salons in Wading River and St. James, NY can recommend the products they’ve tested and approved for long-lasting hair health. When using hair care and styling products, ensure you apply it to your hair and not directly on your scalp. Styling products will clog the pores on your head, preventing them from breathing and suffocating your hair. Overuse of hair styling products on your scalp can lead to thinning hair and hair loss.

Swimming pool water usually contains chlorine and other chemicals to prevent the growth of bacteria and algea. While this is important to keep the pools clean, it is not so good for your hair. Chlorine can dry out your hair and make it brittle and “fried”. If you can, its best to wear a bathing cap to protect your hair, particularly if you’ve just had a salon treatment you want to protect. If you can’t, or won’t wear a cap, be sure to wet your hair with clean, non-chlorinated water so it’s hydrated before going into the pool water. The clean water will soak up the initial water instead of the chlorinated water. Most importantly, when you get out of the pool, shampoo and condition your hair to remove any residual chemicals and restore the moisture and conditioning the pool water may have removed.
